The population
Spend three investments. Choose one action. Advance a generation.
Every benefit creates a bill elsewhere. Better brains consume energy; childhood consumes adult labour; tools consume inherited knowledge.
The group begins with shallow traditions and little spare energy.
Useful behaviour can be copied, but most information remains attached to living individuals.
Reliable food and social support must improve before expensive brains can pay for themselves.
The cumulative threshold
Intelligence has limited value when knowledge dies with its owner.

Evolution cannot finance intelligence with calories that do not exist.
Transmission becomes cumulative
For the first time, the dead are helping the living.
The archive no longer substantially resets between generations. Each child begins inside a world partly constructed by minds that no longer exist.
The cultural runaway
A species begins adapting to an environment it made itself.
Once knowledge accumulates, intelligence can increase the complexity that makes further intelligence valuable.
Selection is no longer responding only to climate, predators and food.

The environment selecting human intelligence was increasingly built by humans themselves.
Cultural dependency
Eventually, intelligence means knowing how to learn from other people.
Early traditions are shallow enough to rediscover. Later systems contain too many linked stages for any one mind to reconstruct.
Counterfactual species laboratory
Intelligence alone is not enough.
Change the starting body and social system. The same general intelligence produces very different kinds of culture.
Chimpanzee-like pathway
Useful traditions appear, but improvements frequently disappear.

Evidence and assumptions
The model knows where it is guessing.
Evidence mode exposes the epistemic status of mechanisms. Labels describe this documentary’s treatment, not a substitute for a scientific review.
Large brains impose substantial energetic and developmental costs.
Human neural tissue is metabolically expensive, and childbirth and prolonged development impose real constraints.
Cooperative care may have supported longer childhoods.
Shared provisioning and childcare are consistent with the unusual dependency of human young.
Cooking and food processing helped finance brain expansion.
Energy availability is important; the timing and causal weight of cooking remain debated.
Language caused a specific acceleration in brain expansion.
Language leaves no direct fossil record, making exact timing and causal claims difficult.
Cumulative culture increased selection for learning capacity.
The feedback is coherent and modelled seriously, but the evidence does not establish it as a single master cause.
Six bounded traits can stand in for a branching evolutionary history.
They cannot. The simplification exists so that causal dependencies can be manipulated and inspected.

Not a ladder
Human evolution branched, overlapped and repeatedly lost experiments.
Australopithecines, early Homo, Homo erectus, Middle Pleistocene populations, Neanderthals, Denisovans and Homo sapiens should not be read as rungs on an inevitable staircase.
This child knows nothing.
Yet it has inherited
millions of minds.
The human brain did not merely adapt to the world.
It helped create a world that demanded the human brain.
